Raw or cooked natural food? When to feed one or the other?

Natural food provides a diet without processed ingredients, transgenics, by-products or artificial additives, thus allowing for a healthier life.

Dogs are part of the carnivore order, having their ancestry in wolves. Descended from wolves, all dogs evolved as opportunistic carnivores and exhibit distinct anatomical and physiological characteristics that reflect this adaptation. Some aspects that place them in this order are their strong, pointed canines and a much simpler, shorter and more acidic digestive system.

What about cats?

Felis catus is descended from Felis lybica, an African wildcat that became associated with humans more than 10,000 years ago. Cats are therefore strictly carnivores.

As carnivores, cats and dogs both benefit greatly from a fresh, natural meat-based diet. Although the raw diet (BARF DIET) is the only biologically appropriate diet for dogs and cats, because not only are they physiologically prepared and adapted to digest raw meat, but neither one of them has any carbohydrate requirements in their diet.

Anyway, a natural cooked diet can be an alternative to a raw diet, especially when it comes to animals that have a compromised immune system or are more demanding in terms of palatability, or have a specific health condition that would benefit from a cooked diet without bones.

A cooked diet, as well as a raw diet, can be a great ally in the treatment and prevention of various diseases, but you should always consult your vet or an animal nutrition specialist before starting this diet. A balanced, cooked, boneless diet, if formulated correctly, will fulfil your pet's nutritional requirements.
