WELCOME TO THE BARF EXPERIENCE

Raw diet or BARF DIET (Biologically Appropriated Raw Food) is a growing trend in dogs and cats nutrition.

It is an unprocessed and 100% natural raw food, composed only by meat, meaty bones, organs and a mix of fruits and vegetables, without any artificial additives, preservatives or cereals, and therefore an healthier diet with numerous health benefits.

At NATURE PETS we deliver ready-to-eat BARF meals for dogs and cats.

We offer you 100% natural raw meals prepared using the best ingredients and closest to those in nature.

After all, what's better than fresh, natural food? Thousands of years ago what did dogs and cats eat in the wild?

Dogs and cats haven’t always been domesticated animals, and once lived in the wild hunting and eating preys. In this context they ate meat, fish and eggs, some vegetables and fresh herbs. Anatomically, their teeth and jaws are ready to grasp and tear the skin and muscle and
crush the bones. Their stomachs are very acidic (pH 1), and capable of digesting raw meat and bones and dealing with food-borne bacteria that would be harmful to humans. Their digestion begins in the stomach (carnivorous saliva has no enzymes and its teeth do not grind food).
Cereal grains (rice, corn, etc.) are not easily assimilated with fat and protein being the natural energy sources.

What about cats? Cats are strictly carnivores, the most extreme type of predator there is. In the wild, they consume the tissues of the animals they kill.

The feline metabolism is so carnivorous that it simply cannot take advantage of certain nutrients present in plant foods. Felines are unable, for instance, to convert the beta-carotene in carrots into vitamin A, forcing them to consume ready-made vitamin A, such as that found in liver. Nor are they able to combine the amino acids methionine and cysteine to make taurine, an amino acid that is essential for cats' eye and heart health. Fortunately, taurine is not lacking in cats' natural diet, as it is abundant in raw meat and offal (cooking destroys this amino acid).

So, by simply offering a healthy cat a predominantly carnivorous, varied and properly balanced diet, its specific nutritional requirements will be well met. Just like in nature!

WHY FEED RAW?

The process of heating food destroys nutrients as well as the natural enzymes present in the meat and whose function is to improve digestion and fight chronic diseases.

A raw diet thus promotes healthier gut microflora, improving digestion, as well as preserving natural enzymatic activity and maintaining all nutrients, which are normally eliminated by cooking processes.

And why is a raw meat diet the best choice for feeding a dog or cat?

The concept is simple: eating a minimally processed diet is the healthiest diet for any species.

What's more, dogs have 99,8% of the DNA of wolves. Dogs and cats have evolved over the years in terms of appearance, breed and temperament, but being carnivorous animals their digestive systems are still exactly the same as wolves and lions. A chihuahua and a wolf have exactly the same dietary needs, despite their drastic difference in appearance and temperament. The same applies to a cat and a lion.

However, with domestication, they have acquired some limited adaptations to take advantage of the leftovers from our carbohydrate-rich diet, which is why we say that dogs are more flexible carnivores than cats. They are opportunistic carnivores, predators with omnivorous tendencies. But the fact that dogs have certain adaptations for digesting starch (carbohydrates) doesn't mean that a diet with little, or even worse, no animal protein and an abundance of starches is a healthy option. After all surviving is different from thriving!

Thus a well-formulated raw diet prepared with high-quality, digestible proteins will help to promote a long, healthy and happier life for your pet.

For these reasons, both dogs and cats need and benefit from a meat-based diet, with fresh and natural foods, because the best way to avoid illness is to feed them what they are capable to digest. Nature knows better!

Generally speaking, an adult dog can start with 3 to 4% of body weight and see the answer in terms of gain or loss of weight and then make the necessary adjustments. Puppies usually need about 5 to 10% of their body weight in food depending on the weight to be achieved in adult stage.

Another way is to multiply by 2 the amount (by weight) of kibble you're currently feeding, and feed them that same amount of BARF. This is justified by the higher percentage of moisture of this type of feed when compared to kibble.
